10 Ideas On How to Get water at Hunt Camp
Water Is Necessary -*Hunt Camp Water Idea #1
- *Water at camp is necessary and you have to have it no matter what which calls for drastic measures as “In Steal it from the neighbors” if you have to but here’s a list of ways to get water when your far away from a normal source .
- Stealth as in get really drunk , get everyone together and in the middle of the night go to the closest abandoned property with several trucks carrying empty 330 gallon water tanks , a generator with 220 voltage , a friend who’s an electrician and a lot of beer because this takes a while .
- Your friend “The Electricians”- job is to connect the generator to the well pump that is on every abandoned property out there , If there was a house or trailer then there was a water source which means a well with a pump .
- Hook up your power and pump a few beers , It’s going to be a while .
The Hunt For Water -*Hunt Camp Water Idea #2*
- * Look for old hand dug wells on your hunt camp property . If there are signs of old structures , houses , etc , then there’s a good chance of there being a well . Drop some rocks down to see how deep it is and if there’s water ,
- If so determine depth and and get enough 3/4 inch pvc to reach the bottom , First cap the pvc then drill some 3/8 inch holes in pipe starting at around 18 inches from bottom of pipe , this is to keep trash , mud etc.. from clogging pipe , Then glue on fittings about 2 feet above ground and attach a household garden spigot that you will the connect a hose to that you will then connect your pump to and connect to your generator to and remember the beer , It takes about 2 1/2 hours to fill a 333 gallon tank up or around 6 beers .
- You can also do it the easy noncheap way and buy a solar powered water pump and drop pump end down into well but thats only if your rich , otherwise you’ll have to DIY
Roof Water Tastes Great-*The Hunt Camp water Idea #3
- Gutters work great , You most likely have a shelter at camp that covers your trailers and deck , If you don’t your the only hunter that does not .
- Run gutters the length of your cover and plumb them into your holding tanks , From your holding tanks you can then pump water up to your water tank stand that if made correctly should hold at least one 330 gallon tank and then plumb this to your kitchen and bath .
- Redundency ! Put multiple ball valves to shut down water supply before leaving camp . It’s not that you need more that one it’s just that if everyone leaves camp hopefully someone accidentally closed a valve somewhere in the system and you won’t lose all your water .
Ram Pump- Water 24/7 *Hunt Camp water Idea #4
- A Ram Pump. I’ve built 2 and they work . If you have a stream but your camp is uphill a ram pump is a good consideration because once you build it you don’t do anything else , it just pumps water uphill without power ,
- The concept is simple – You set the ram pump in the stream below a cascade or build a small dam and set pump below dam .
- The water entering top end of pump creates pressure which forces the water into pipes and past check valve #1 (in open position),
- After passing first check valve the water is stopped at second check valve #2 (that is in closed position)
- Having nowhere to go and under pressure from incoming water it tries to escape up into expansion chamber,
- At a certain point expansion chamber can not hold any more water and will have air trapped on top of water in upper area of chamber , this air being pressurized then forces water back down into piping.
- ( If it were mechanical it would behave like a spring forcing water back into piping ) at which point it encounters the first check valve that is momentarily in a closed position and the secondary check valve opens momentarily because of water flow being redirected back to check valve #1 which relieves pressure that was holding secondary check valve in closed position at begining of process.
- At this point water can be redirected out of plumbing using a shutoff valve and into a hose and on to where it is needed.
- To get water where you need it I would recommend a 1/4 inch reinforced air hose with the fittings as they will work and give an airtight connection which is needed to ensure the water continues pumping,
- The reason for a small diameter hose is the weight of water in the hose will add up as the length of hose and incline in elevation is increased .The smaller the hose the less volume the water and less weight which will allow a greater height that water can be pumped and for longer distance . It will take longer to fill containers but it will run 24 /7 which means you will have a continual supply of water at camp.
- Any air leaks will cause hose to lose water pressure . Even a small stream can pump enough water to keep hunt camp supplied with ample water .
Tarps solve all lifes problems-*Hunt Camp Water Idea #5
- Tarp rain catcher , While not the greatest idea it does work and will collect more water than you would think ,
Check out my Pinterest site , I have a huge number of ideas on how to get water at hunt camp along with a lot of other hunting related pins, If you like knives and are looking for a new one there are 57 different types of knives on my site but they will link to other Pinterest sites where you will find even more knives . I’m surprised at the quality of knives these days and these are excellent ones to look at .
Drill You Own Dang Well !-*Hunt Camp Water Idea #6
- Here’s a method that will work for getting water at camp if the soil on your property is workable for this method .
- Ive seen a variety of similar DIY well drilling but on this one the added drill teeth gives it a big plus
Hit It Harder Josh - *Hunt Camp Water Idea #7
- This way of drilling a well requires a big ole dang sledge hammer and your nephew to do the hammering .
- For this method you screw on a piece of 3/4 inch galvanized pipe with a cap on upper end , then climb a 8 foot ladder and beat the hell out of it -“All Day Long” – driving first one section then the next and then the next until you reach water then drive another section for good measure . If nephew hits the cap too hard and breaks through damaging the pipe threads then you have to start over from the beginning which means buying a new spike and a cap or two and more sections of pipe and more beer but that one will come out of nephews pocket so don’t tell him till you get to the beer store.
- Your taking a chance on this one because if the soil is too dense you may not be able to drive the spike through and will have wasted a lot of money but you could be wasting money with a professional well drilling company as they will not give you any idea as to depth that water is to be expected to be at .
- They may tell you if they have drilled one in the area and give you the depth in which that one reached water but that will be all they’ll tell you .

Water Auger Well Drilling Using A Earth Auger-* Hunt Camp Water Idea #9
- I haven’t seen this one yet but it’s because it’s not for drilling water wells . At least not yet.
- They have- 2″ -3″- 4″ diameter augers but I would get the 3′ if I wanted to drop a hose down the borehole, but if I were considering an actual well pump being used then I would do research to see what size bore bit is needed and you need to consider if the motor on the auger can handle drilling the size borehole you want .
- You may do well to buy the 2″ auger bit and the larger auger bit that you think you will need to accommodate your pump size but drill a starter hole first with the 2″ auger bit which brings you back to a real problem of possibly drilling down with the 2′ auger and not being able to extract it so that you can drill with the larger size auger that you need.
- This is a problem for someone with burnable money to solve
- Whoever can devise a connector that will allow this auger to connect to a 3/4 inch galvanized pipe will make some money because it looks like it’s a perfect set up to DIY a water well at hunt camp .
- At $ 378. on Amazon it’s expensive but cheaper than calling in the pros and what if it does work then you can drill other holes all over the place. Drill a well at your house and stop drinking that toxic tap water. Drill a well at your friends hunt camp.
- [You’ll be – “Hero For The Day “]
This is the auger from Amazon and there are only 2 small extensions that go with it because this is only meant for drilling small holes for planting and fencing but if you bought it with intent to use it primarily to drill a water well then it will have offset it’s cost in one projects use and the rest will be profit if you start charging for work done .
The question is – Will it drill a deep enough hole to reach ground water ?
Solar Powered Water Pump, uses only two one way valves and the Sun.Hunt Camp Water Idea # 10

This is a solar powered water pump idea that uses two one way valves and a Fresnel lens to produce very hot temperatures that the pump then uses to move water in both a vacuum and pressure cycle. This design can pump water more than 8 feet high, by adding more of these pump tanks in series we can potential lift water many hundreds of feet into the air.
If set up correctly you can pump water up to your storage tanks while away from camp .
This is also a good way to pump water uphill to a garden at camp which is what I like about it as I am determined to get a good working self running garden going that i can walk away from for weeks or months at a time and hopefully if it is set up correctly I will come back to an abundance of fruit and vegetables but that’s going to be really difficult but really worth it to be able to have vegetables at camp for added fresh food at camp ..I’ll keep working at it and if I figure out the right combination of methods to make it work I’ll then post a step by step way of building -[“A Garden That Grows Itself ?”]
Here's another Ram Pump Video to Watch If you Need Water At Hunt Camp
This is a pretty good video that explains the process of using a Ram Pump to get water but this set up can also be used to get air pressure to aerate a pond or fill a flat tire by way of adding a valve to the top of the air chamber so if you are building your Ram Pump following the same method these guys are using you could add the valve then run a air hose back up to the same pond your getting the water from and using a weight and air hose or garden hose run that hose down to a sprinkler or soaker hose or pvc pipe with holes drilled in it and this will aerate your pond so that you can have cleaner water for your hunt camp garden, Your deer to drink , your water storage tanks etc..
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_aeration
Water aeration is often required in water bodies that suffer from hypoxic or anoxic conditions, often caused by upstream human activities such as sewage discharges, agricultural run-off, or over-baiting a fishing lake. Aeration can be achieved through the infusion of air into the bottom of the lake, lagoon or pond or by surface agitation from a fountain or spray-like device to allow for oxygen exchange at the surface and the release of gasses such as carbon dioxide, methane or hydrogen sulfide.
Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a major contributor to water quality. Not only do fish and most other aquatic animals need it, but aerobic bacteria help decompose organic matter. When oxygen concentrations become low, anoxic conditions may develop which can decrease the ability of the water body to support life.
